How It Works

Quick answers for travelers

Practical estimates for flight duration, local-time differences, and expected recovery windows after long-haul trips.

Flight duration range

We show a gate-to-gate range instead of a single number, so you can plan around typical routing and operational variation.

Time difference by date

Offsets can change with DST transitions. Use a travel date to avoid mistakes when scheduling meetings and arrivals.

Jet lag severity + plan

Route pages include severity level, adaptation timeline, and day-by-day light/sleep guidance for faster adjustment.

Methodology

How we estimate

Flight times are calculated from great-circle distance (Haversine formula) between airport coordinates, then converted to gate-to-gate estimates using cruise speed heuristics for short, medium, and long-haul flights, plus a fixed overhead for taxi, takeoff, climb, descent, and approach.

Time differences use IANA time zone data with DST awareness via the browser's built-in Intl API. Jet lag plans follow evidence-aligned heuristics: gradual sleep shifting, timed light exposure, and caffeine management.

All estimates are approximate. Actual flight times vary by airline, aircraft type, routing, and weather. Jet lag guidance is general wellness information — not medical advice. See our full disclaimer.

Coverage

  • 187curated airports in the dataset
  • 2,208route pairs with dedicated route and flight-time pages
  • DST-aware time zone conversion based on IANA zones
  • SEOprogrammatic pages with breadcrumbs, FAQs, and internal links

Transparency

We publish our assumptions, explain where estimates can vary, and provide a corrections path so users can evaluate confidence before relying on a route page for planning decisions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this flight time calculator?
Estimates are based on great-circle distance, route-length speed models, and gate-to-gate overhead. They are planning estimates, not airline schedule guarantees.
Does the time zone converter account for daylight saving time?
Yes. Time differences are calculated with IANA time zone rules and DST-aware browser APIs, so offsets can vary by date.
How long does jet lag usually last?
Most travelers adapt around 1 to 1.5 hours per day. Trips crossing 6+ time zones often require several days, especially after eastbound travel.
Can I share a route-specific plan?
Yes. The route planner supports shareable links with selected origin and destination. Route pages also have dedicated URLs for direct sharing.
